Sclerotherapy

WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades.

HOW LONG DOES SCLEROTHERAPY LAST?

How Long Does It Take for Varicose Veins to Disappear After Sclerotherapy? Small veins will usually disappear more quickly than larger ones. Spider veins will disappear in around 3-6 weeks, and larger veins will respond in about 3-4 months.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

Common side effects of sclerotherapy include: bruising. stinging. swelling.

More serious side effects include:

  • allergic reaction to the sclerosing agent.
  • skin ulceration around the injection site.
  • blood clots in the treated veins.
  • discomfort around the injection site, caused by inflammation.
  • infection in the skin.

DO THE RESULTS LAST FOREVER?

Generally speaking, the results of sclerotherapy are both permanent and temporary. These results can be permanent because veins that are treated will fade away, but because new spider of varicose veins can develop over time, the results are also temporary.

WHAT TO AVOID

What Should Patients Avoid After Sclerotherapy?
  • Being exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Going into a whirlpool.
  • Sitting in a sauna.
  • Taking hot showers or baths.
  • Participating in strenuous exercises or sports, such as weight-lifting, jogging, tennis, and jumping.
  • Applying compresses (hot) to the treatment area.

A consultation is recommended AND required to see if you would be a good fit for Sclerotherapy.

SCLEROTHERAPY VS LASER

Laser therapy is more painful. It takes much longer to treat spider veins and therefore less veins may be treated in a single session, as compared with use of sclerotherapy. This means that sclerotherapy can provide optimal results for spider vein removal with less time and treatment sessions.

HOW LONG DOES SCLEROTHERAPY TAKE?

In most cases of sclerotherapy, the salt solution is injected through a very fine needle directly into the vein. At this point, you may experience mild discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes, especially when larger veins are injected. The procedure itself takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes.

RECOMMENDATIONS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

Our NP, Melissa Timberlake, advises to sleep in your compression stockings only the first night after the procedure. After that, you can continue wearing them only during the day.

This will also be gone over extensively before you leave our spa.
